Welcome to the July 2026 issue of Personal Care Magazine. This edition features a wrap of this year’s NYSCC Suppliers’ Day in New York City. The event brought together nearly 700 exhibitors and around 12,500 attendees, including a 15% international audience representing 67 countries across the beauty and personal care industry.
As the NYSCC put it, the energy inside the Javits Center reminded us why our community is unlike any other industry.
Elsewhere in this issue, we include cutting-edge cosmetic chemistry covering topics such as delivery systems, peptides, marine ingredients, skin care and sun care.
Speaking of sun care, heartfelt congratulations must go to DSM-Firmenich after the US Food and Drug Administration added bemotrizinol – commercially known as Parsol Shield - to its list of permitted sunscreen active ingredients (see News, page 11).
This marks the first new sunscreen active ingredient that has been added to the FDA’s over-the-counter (OTC) sunscreen monograph since 1999
DSM-Firmenich has put a huge amount of work into this. It formed a consortium with stakeholders including customers, dermatologists and the Skin Cancer Foundation, and it worked with lawmakers to show the need to protect consumers and address the health issues associated with sun damage.
The advantage of bemotrizinol – an organic chemical UV filter - is broad-spectrum coverage against both UVB and UVA, as well as its photostability.
Due to its molecule size, it also means that formulations using bemotrizinol will feel more like skin care products than with mineral-based filters.
DSM-Firmenich’s hard work has paid off, and now – at last - bemotrizinol can now be used in OTC sun care products without the need for additional pre-market approval; it expects products to be on US shelves by the end of the year.
