Bitop actives 'protect microbiome'

Bitop has performed new efficacy studies on its extremolytes, Ectoin Natural (INCI: Ectoin) and Glycoin Natural (INCI: Glyceryl Glucoside). It found that both protect the viability of the skin microbiome, while also offering blue light protection.

Four bacterial strains representing a large percentage of the microbiome were incubated with the two active and their viability and growth were measured afterward. Both actives not only had no negative impact on the microbiome but maintained its viability. Glycoin Natural “even enhances bacterial growth at a low percentage of usage, thus a prebiotic effect can be claimed”, Bitop said.

In an in vitro study, both actives “showed powerful protection properties on a cellular level”, the company said. In addition to the proven protection efficacy of Ectoin Natural against blue light-induced oxidative stress and pigmentation, this proved its efficacy in protecting skin cells from blue light-induced DNA damage.

This study was also the first time that Glycoin Natural was proven to have such efficacy. It boosts the expression of Aquaporin 3 (AQP3) in keratinocytes, when the skin is exposed to blue light, maintaining their natural level.
