Lubrizol highlights PFAS-free peptide portfolio

Lubrizol has highlighted the elimination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), from its peptide synthesis process.

The US firm has introduced three commercially available peptides synthesized without PFA: Uplevity peptide, Uplevity e-Lift peptide, and Leuphasyl peptide.

While the use of PFAS in cosmetic ingredients is limited and not typically present final formulations, Lubrizol is taking proactive steps to eliminate these substances from peptide synthesis processes due to global environmental concerns and tightening regulations.

These ingredients are produced via Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis (SPPS), a Nobel Prize-winning method that typically requires reagents such as TFA, a PFAS.

While TFA is not added to final cosmetic products and is currently out of scope in some US regulations, evolving restrictions in both the US and EU reinforce the importance of Lubrizol’s forward-thinking approach.

Lubrizol has prioritized a science-driven, performance-validated approach to ensure its PFAS-free peptides meet the highest standards of quality and functionality.

“We recognize that sustainability is not just about being first—it’s about doing it right,” said beauty global marketing director,”  Elena Canadas.

“Our PFAS-free peptides are the result of meticulous formulation work, regulatory foresight, and a deep respect for the planet,” she added.
