The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) has announced the 2025 awardees and finalists for its Madam CJ Walker Scholarship, sponsored by Mary Kay.
The Scholarship Selection Committee has chosen University of South Florida biological health sciences undergraduate student Chinaza Munonye and University of Cincinnati pharmaceutical sciences doctoral student Lanesa Mahon to each receive a $5,000 scholarship.
The scholarships supports under-represented individuals pursuing an undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate degree in chemical, physical, medical, pharmaceutical, biological, or related sciences and technology with an interest in pursuing a career in the cosmetics and personal care industry.
The two finalists recognized by the committee this year for their achievements are Spelman College health science undergraduate student Lauren Forney and University of California, Los Angeles chemistry doctoral student Ajoa Jamila (AJ) Addae.
Awardees and finalists also receive a financial support package to attend the SCC’s 79th Annual Scientific Meeting & Showcase in New York on 16-17 December, where they will be recognized on-stage during the annual awards breakfast and have the opportunity to present their research during the conference via poster in the showcase.
“The selection committee reviewed the achievements of more than 40 applicants for the scholarship program this year,” said SCC chief executive Erica O’Grady.
“These honorees demonstrated impressive accomplishments and embodiment of the spirit and legacy of Madam CJ Walker. We are pleased to not only recognize these young scientists, but to support their educational goals and future contributions to the industry,” she added.
Madam CJ Walker (born Sarah Breedlove; 1867-1919) was an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political and social activist. She is regarded as the first female self-made millionaire in America.
Walker made her fortune by developing and marketing a line of cosmetics and hair care products for black women through the business she founded, Madam CJ Walker Manufacturing Company.
