Countdown to in-cosmetics Korea: the extended third edition

The only exhibition dedicated to personal care ingredients in Korea, extends to a three-day event due to popular demand, along with the addition of new show areas

The third edition of in-cosmetics Korea is fast approaching, with the Reed Exhibitions event returning to Seoul’s COEX centre between 20-22 June. In light of reports that the Korean cosmetic industry will continue to grow rapidly and Euromonitor International’s predictions that the annual retail sales value will rise to US$11.4bn (£9.13) – a 4% increase on 2016 – the exhibition is undeniably more crucial for Korean and international product development and marketing professionals than ever before.

Korean cosmetic manufacturers import 78% of their ingredients and, as they continue to invest huge amounts in R&D, the country remains fertile ground for international suppliers. A comprehensive cross section of these global companies will gather at in-cosmetics Korea to exhibit their latest and most innovative products. There is less than a week to go until the show, which is hotly anticipated after the success of the previous two years; the 2016 event saw an impressive 97% increase in visitors from the inaugural 2015 show.

Due to this intensifying demand, the 2017 show will open for an extra day, bringing it in line with longer-running in-cosmetics events, such as its Global and Asia editions. Over three days, R&D professionals will have the opportunity to source the latest ingredients, learn about the latest trends and network with industry colleagues.

There are currently 214 exhibitors signed up for in-cosmetics Korea; one in four of these are new to the show and 60% of the first-time exhibitors are international, reflecting the global appeal of the event.

Many of the world’s leading cosmetic companies will be exhibiting, including AzkoNobel, Clariant, Evonik and SEPPIC, plus a select number will showcase their latest ingredients in the Innovation Zone, including:

•    Gattefossé - Gatuline Expression AF
This has been developed to lift the eye contour area and is extracted from organic horse chestnut flowers. The formula visibly erases wrinkles and restores a positive expression.

•    Seiwa Kasei - Hazumi-Hada
‘Hazumi-Hada’ means plump skin in Japanese. Seiwa Kasei has developed the collagen-derived peptide with its unique technology and boosted its anti-ageing efficacy by promoting collagen production.

•    Contipro - HyWhite
HyWhite is the first whitening hyaluronic acid which offers great penetrability even in very low concentration and is effective in both Asian and Caucasian types of skin.

•    Lipotec - Reproage Peptide
This peptide reprograms epidermal basal cells at the epigenetic level by targeting MicroRNA-145 levels to potentially improve skin properties.

•    Givaudan Active Beauty - ResistHyal
ResistHyal is a revolutionary bio-active hair enhancer acting on keratin infrastructure to enhance all hair beauty features at once, including shine, thickness and strength.

•    Lucas Meyer - Siligel
Siligel is a natural gelling agent providing an amazing silicone-like skin feel with high resistance to electrolytes and hydrating properties.

The Innovation Zone is ideal for visitors who are short on time and are seeking out the brand new ingredients that really matter. In a similar vein, in-cosmetics Korea will be offering Product Trails, enabling R&D professionals to quickly navigate the show floor to learn about the latest in natural actives, moisturisers and anti-ageing.

Education to the fore
Alongside the hundreds of exhibitors involved in the 2017 show, a programme of seminars will provide R&D and marketing professionals with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the global and regional cosmetic markets.

At in-cosmetics Korea 2016, the educational programme was hugely popular. An even stronger agenda has been put together for this year, with sessions including:

•    Beauty opportunities in Southeast Asia – Sharon Kwek, Senior Beauty and Personal Care Innovation and Insights Analyst at Mintel, will explore the key trends, innovations and insights in the beauty market impacting South East Asia in the field of makeup, skin care and hair care routines.
•    Eco-friendly and biotechnology-based ingredient trends in Korea – Dr Chang Seo Park, Head of R&D Center at NRC, will discuss some of the current and more significant progresses made in the development of cosmetic ingredients produced with a view to addressing the environmental issues in Korea.
•    The present and future of customisation – Belinda Carli, Director of the Institute of Personal Care Science, will discuss the importance of personal care companies embracing customisation and what it means to brands.
•    Mega beauty trends 2020 – Nicole Fall, Founder of fivebyfifty, will provide a strategic insight into 10 of the key personal care trends that are set to impact Asia Pacific over the next three years, bringing clarity to the region’s fast-changing beauty categories.
•    European and Chinese cosmetics regulations Ja-eun Song of the Korea Cosmetic Association will provide an overview of EU and Chinese regulations to help attendees better understand the needs of both.

The programme will also feature seminars with a more technical focus, such as a session by Frederic Serres of Givaudan Active Beauty about achieving full body rejuvenation by targeting keratinocytes stem cells. In another seminar, Marty Lumain of health and beauty ingredients manufacturer SEPPIC will discuss the company’s ‘Mood Paint’ concept – new emotion-stimulating formulas inspired by various artistic movements.

The sensorial world
Additionally, in-cosmetics Korea will showcase a brand new Sensory Bar. With texture and sensory properties playing a pivotal role in consumers’ purchasing decisions, it is vital cosmetic manufacturers ensure their products score highly against all five senses, especially smell, feel and aesthetics. Visitors will be invited to touch and feel various creams, oils, masks and balms – each possessing unusual textures and sensations and manufactured by the innovators in this field.

A Live Demonstration area will be located next to the Sensory Bar, where suppliers will give 30-minute presentations on how to formulate their sensory products.
