Film-forming polymers aid sun protection

At the Sunscreen Symposium in September, AkzoNobel highlighted its Dermacryl E and Dermacryl 79 film-forming polymers that enable formulators to create the finest sun protection products.

Dermacryl polymers give superior water resistance and SPF retention to sunscreens ranging from aqueous emulsion systems to alcohol-based continuous sprays. Sponsored by the Florida Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, the Sunscreen Symposium 2015 took place 17-19 September in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

For emulsion-based sunscreen systems, Dermacryl E (INCI: Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer) polymer provides effective and durable film formation, enabling the formulation of long-lasting, high SPF systems. Easy-to-use and cost-effective, it helps to create a wide range of products that offer excellent skin feel on application and drydown, and aesthetic appeal to consumers seeking the best in sun protection.

“Dermacryl E delivers the same level of water resistance in emulsion-based sunscreens as Dermacryl 79 does in continuous sprays,” said Dennis Crimmins, AkzoNobel North American sales manager for Personal Care. “It offers formulators features and benefits of an industry-leading polymer.”

Dermacryl E is compatible with a broad range of sunscreen ingredients, including the commonly-used actives. Supplied as a 45% active low viscosity emulsion, it gives formulators flexibility and ease of use in processing, with no impact on formulation viscosity.
