South Korean speciality ingredient manufacturer Shinsung Materials has developed a patented technology for producing water-soluble UV filters, specifically Ecamsule (terephthalylidene dicamphor sulfonic acid (TDSA)).
The company's proprietary neutralisation process using tromethamine enables smoother incorporation into cosmetic formulations while improving photostability and UV protection efficiency.
The technology addresses previous limitations in handling, storage stability and transportation.
Despite its excellent UV protection performance, conventional TDSA has faced limitations related to handling during formulation, storage stability and transportation efficiency.
To overcome these drawbacks, Shinsung Materials adopted proprietary neutralization processes using tromethamine as a core step to enable the water-soluble UV filter to be smoothly incorporated into cosmetic formulations.
The company also commercialized the liquid ingredient in a high-purity powder form, enabling simpler processing and broader use across formulations.
This is expected to expand its potential applications across sunscreens, sun serums and hybrid skin care products.
“Application of the patented technology has enhanced UVA protection performance. By maximizing photostability—remaining stable under light while retaining water solubility—we have significantly improved the fundamental UV protection efficiency of sun care products,” said a Shinsung Materials spokesperson.
Shinsung Materials has commercialised the ingredient in high-purity powder form, meeting USP 44 standards for the US market.
The company has localised manufacturing technology for Ecamsule, previously exclusive to companies including L'Oréal, reducing import reliance.
Shinsung Materials also produces COSMOS-certified oil thickeners Dextrin Palmitate and Stearoyl Inulin, alongside high-purity preservatives and diol-based ingredients including 1,2-Hexanediol and Ethylhexylglycerin.
