An overview of anti-ageing skin care

As time goes by, ageing is an inevitable thing for humans, especially skin ageing. Skin ageing is caused by the degradation of elastin and collagen. The degradation of collagen and elastin (skin ageing) can be caused by intrinsic and extrinsic processes and usually starts during the twenties or thirties, so it is recommended for young women to prevent it as early as possible.

The intrinsic process of ageing depends on time, from within ourselves because cells also face ageing too as we grow older and for women, the decreasing levels of the hormone estrogen, collagen, and elastin also influence the skin integrity. This will accumulate in our skin and make it thinner, less smooth, and excessive lines appear on skin. On the other hand there is extrinsic ageing caused by the environment, such as ultraviolet exposure, pollution, and poor nutrition.

The amount of estrogen also influences the amount of glycosaminoglycan (GAG). The reduction of GAG can lead to a decrease in the water content in our skin and affect the skin turgor. The results are the wrinkles, hyperpigmentation (the amount of melanin increasing, hence, producing a darker tone), and hypopigmentation (the colour of the skin gets lost). With all these extrinsic and intrinsic processes/ factors, there are several methods that can be used to treat and prevent premature skin ageing for women.
