Silicones in cosmetics: 70 years and counting

Editor Tim Probert visits Dow’s largest European silicones production facility in Seneffe, Belgium to find out more about a vital ingredient found in a profusion of personal care products

Silicones can be misunderstood. As one of the world’s leading producers of silicones, Dow is sensitive about this subject. Dow would like you to know that silicones are safe to use. The experts agree that silicones are safe to use. 

There is some debate, however, about whether they are damaging to the environment. The evidence is inconclusive.

Some argue that some silicones are not biodegradable and could accumulate in the oceans. Some say silicones can break down relatively quickly. Some say the risks of any accumulation are unknown or unproven.
