Facial expressions are a means of communication and convey emotional states. An expressive face is beautiful; it transmits personality and emotions, but over the years leads to deep and permanent skin wrinkles.
Muscles responsible for facial expression are contracted when they receive neurotransmitters released at the neuromuscular synapsis. The daily stimulation of facial muscles leads to a greater skin strain, and after the age of 30 the first wrinkles start to appear and they become more evident over the following years.
The continuous research on the treatment of expression wrinkles has led Lipotec to SNAP-8TM peptide, an octapeptide elongation of ARGIRELINETM peptide. This peptide is an analogue of the N-terminal end of SNAP-25 that competes with the native protein for a position in the SNARE complex to destabilise it. By decreasing neuronal excitability, it reduces expression wrinkles topically with an alternative mechanism to botulinum toxin.
An in vivo test performed on women volunteers that applied a cream containing 10% SNAP-8TM peptide twice a week showed a 63% maximum wrinkle depth reduction after 28 days.
SNAP-8TM peptide can be incorporated into cosmetic formulations intended to remove deep lines and wrinkles on the forehead or around the eye area.
